Scribe
I’m so intrigued by Scribe by Alyson Hagy. In short: It’s about a woman who barters her letter-writing services, ie her *words.* I’m about 1/3 done, and our protagonist is attempting a letter for a man who then wants her to dispose of it and “deliver” its memorized contents in person to the recipient.
“He had told her his transgressions, and she had recorded them to the best of her ability. But it wasn’t safe or simple to take on burdens of another person’s history, all those sins and vacancies. The burdens sometimes stayed with her even after they were lifted from those who had earned them. They accumulated. So it must be. Translating human misdeeds was all she knew how to do. Her sister had been a healer and a meddler. She, herself, had nothing to offer the world except the recording of its failures.”
BOOM. Wow.
