Netflix (Bandwagon) Book Club

Once again, in case you haven’t noticed, books are #Trending. Books are cool!

Netflix (with Starbucks as a sponsor) has joined the book club fray. But see, this is interesting, because books have been adapted for film and stage for a very long time. Like, forever. I don’t know — it’s like this is marketing thing or something? 🤔 (Netflix, you’re a little late to the game.)

But anything that highlights the source document — the book — is good with me. Netflix’s first selection is Passing by Nella Larsen. Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black) will host “But Have You Read the Book?” a new “social series” that dives into the book-to-screen adaptation.

And did I mention it’s sponsored by Starbucks? This could go either way: in the direction of Reese and Hello Sunshine (super successful) or Literati (that book club “curated” by the likes of Sir Richard Branson and Malala that I keep getting ads for that just seems too try-hard). What’s it gonna be, Netflix? You say it’s “not your average book club” (??), but remind me how it’s different? (Or, as their web copy says: “But don’t get it twisted: This is not your average book club.”) #Twisted
