News of the World

“Maybe life is just carrying news. Surviving to carry the news. Maybe we have just one message, and it is delivered to us when we are born and we are never sure what it says; it may have nothing to do with us personally but it must be carried by hand through a life, all the way, and at the end handed over, sealed.”

Are we participants in the world, or just readers of it? News of the World is a lovely, lovely book, and I’m happy to be discussing it later today with my high school’s book club. I highly recommend it if: You like thinking about “communication” (what it means and how information is transmitted) and/or you’re curious about the mutability of a place’s “culture.” If the work of Leif Enger resonates with you, News of the World will too.

Do “faraway places” have any relevance to us? Something to think about when reading this book, which is set in a “faraway time” (just after the Civil War), but being read – by me – in the first months of 2021. #EverythingOldIsNewAgain
