Lucy by the Sea
Just finished Lucy by the Sea…typical Elizabeth Strout, which means deceptively simple observations about life that are truthful and meaningful because they’re woven into glimpses of very complex characters who readers have grown to know and love. (Can you point me to any of her novels that feature characters who don’t pop up in others?)
Lucy says, “You know, I read a book a few years ago, and some character in it said something like, It’s our duty to bear the burden of the mystery with as much grace as we can.” (Are we getting meta here? Lucy is an author, after all.)
It’s weighty days for some friends I love. The sudden death of a spouse. A hard diagnosis. Will I be able to bear the burden of the mystery with as much grace as I can when something truly weighty comes my way? “It is a gift in this life that we do not know what awaits us.” I suppose so. Thank you, Elizabeth Strout, for always giving me so much to think about and reflect on.
{Lots of love to B. Lots of love to C.}
