A State of Becoming

Resident Culture Brewing’s Victoria Yards event space in Charlotte, NC

“We carry around ideas of people in our heads, fixed ideas of their character and firm predictions of how they’ll behave, what they’ll say before the hour is up and the facial expressions they’ll make that will unaccountably get under our skin. We tell stories about them that never vary, never improve, then confirm that our ideas are accurate every time we get reacquainted.” – from A Calling for Charlie Barnes, by Joshua Ferris. (I read this book at the very end of 2021 and I think I’d add it to my “gobble up” list too. I’ll share my wayback post about it in stories..)

Props to Resident Culture Brewing’s Victoria Yards event space for this bit I could see peeking out above the fence. It kind of made me chuckle because, yeah, bankers are people too, ya know. I’ve never been inside this area that occupies an otherwise unused parking lot, but you can swipe to see the whole installation designed by artist Morag Myers [cough] using the words of Charlotte creatives led by the city’s poet laureate, Junious “Jay” Ward. {That pic I nabbed online...} It’s called “A State of Becoming.”

As I continue sussing out the whats and hows of maybe getting some book events going, I keep thinking about this thing Matt saw on Twitter (or X, whatever) a few months ago. {3rd pic … and we have no idea who originally shared it.} Maybe we’ve got rose-tinted glasses on after being away for so many years, but honestly, I love living in a place that continues to grapple with its identity — a place that looks for paths forward instead of reveling in its past. Bring it on because I find all of it very inspiring…
