John Green Should Have Consulted Me
You know, I’m reading Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green. And it’s as fascinating and engrossing as everyone — including Ann Patchett — says. I’ll include some notes on it in a nonfiction roundup, which I haven’t done for ages. I will!
Perhaps, however, this is the book that I was meant to write. See, I did a report on “Tuberculosis (T.B.)” in 5th grade, and Ms. Todd was extremely impressed with how I “certainly put it in [my] own words.” You can see for yourself if you swipe through to her “From the Desk of Ms. T.” cat stationery.
“Let’s say…” that you’ve been diagnosed with “T.B.” “You probably would want to know how you got it.” My report will give you some possible reasons.
If you “kind of doubt” that it’s from drinking unpasteurized milk, I also present a cause that “sound[s] more likely.”
“Well,” if you’re prescribed a trip to a sanatorium because “the doctor told you it isn’t too late,” I will be honest: My description of this place sounds lovely.
Also, because of all this research in 1985 or 1986, I already knew that “The history of tuberculosis is very ancient,” but I will continue to read Everything is Tuberculosis anyway.
