New Words Coming Soon
I hadn’t walked this part of First Ward in a while; last time that I recall, this building was adorned with “New Words Coming Soon!” So, I guess the words have come — and they are good.
“Ways to Ease Your Animal Mind” by Ada Límon, former US Poet Laureate (and instructor at the low-residency MFA program at Queens University here in Charlotte)
“A cloud of cormorants comes
flooding out of rushed wind,
out of stunned sea-bound waves.
The air is unwound with bird
and you are not lost in the least,
but a deliberate deserter.
Let go the ox cart.
Let go the claw and climb.
This fevered mess of world
Is well done. Lean in and nuzzle
Its exceptional need to be yours.”
I love poetry murals. (And Charlotte has a good number of them.) New words — literally — came to this wall, and they remind me that new words (or ideas, or however you want to think about it) can come to anyone…you just have to listen with open ears and open mind. (And maybe take a return visit once in a while…you might be surprised what materializes.) #comingsoon
