Birthday Book Recs: 29/50
Peace Like a River by Leif Enger

There’s still a bit of punch list-type stuff going on at our house, which means that sometimes the chit-chat flows freely when normally you’d just be working in silence.

“So, do you read one book at a time…or…?” (as he looks at the numerous books stacked by a chair)

[conversation ensues about past and present professional situations regarding books/publishing/events]

“But do you have a favorite book?”

To him — and now to this hallowed and sacred and extremely official space on the internet — I reply, “yup.” It’s this one: Peace Like a River by Leif Enger. And to employ a sneakily simple line that Enger uses in this mournful but beautiful novel about a dad, his three children, and some miracles, “Make of that what you will.”

{I actually have another “favorite book” that I’ll get around to posting eventually. Listen, I’ve got two kids — and they are both my favorites — so I am proclaiming the same with books.}
