The Material
A+++ and 100% to this clever and skewering novel about a Stand-Up MFA program. (Haha) If everything’s a bit, is anything real? I think I can be somewhat funny on occasion, but I could not possibly write anything anywhere near Camille Bordas’ sharp and humorous commentary on academia, self-doubt, the desire to stand out/be different, and relationships of both the familial and romantic sort. Nor am I a philosopher (although I like to play one on Instagram), but this novel presents some good head-scratcher quandaries couched in the ridiculousness of a Masters program in Stand-Up Comedy, where the instructors are famous comedians in their own right. (It falls under the purview of the English Department at an unnamed Chicago university in case you’re wondering) So this is my thesis abstract for you, in brief … The Material by Camille Bordas: I Recommend, with High Honors.
