RAWTS: Amy’s Take on The Overstory

Well, I cried.

I can name just two books that have evoked this strong of an emotion from me: The Stone Diaries, by Carol Shields and Peace Like a River, by Leif Enger. I could possibly add The Time Traveler’s Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger, but I read it many years ago while very pregnant, so I’d need a do-over to check. And a little birdie has hinted that Colum McCann’s Apeirogon might fall in that category as well once I read it. But that is it. The Overstory was that good, that beautiful, that profound.

I’m working on a longer-form blog post about The Overstory and a recent NYT Opinion piece titled “The Empty Religions of Instagram.” (Oh yes.) Stay tuned. (Edit: It’s HERE.) But otherwise, here’s my review: “I cried.” Thank you to everyone who recommended The Overstory.

{Back story: If you flip back to December, you can see how my husband and I started reading The Overstory together. Kind of. I’ll do a post about co-reading-with-someone-who-is-with-you-all-the-time soon. It’s been an interesting experiment!}
