A Beautifully Furnished House

Two days wandering New Orleans, and I think this is my favorite picture? (Ok, that’s not totally true…so many bright, beautiful, and interesting things to see!)

But 2 days wandering New Orleans = 3 bookshops visited. I try really hard to not buy new (meaning new releases) books these days. (This is why I currently have 20 books out from the library. OMG.) But I do like to support independent bookstores, so my new book-buying philosophy =

* Local-to-where-I-happen-to-be author/setting — The Yellow House, by Sarah M. Broom purchased at The Garden District Bookshop.

* Used books, particularly from the 80s or early 90s (ah, nostalgia) — Signed edition of The Beet Queen by Louise Erdrich (purchased at Crescent City Books, which is also where that image was taken); In the Land of Dreamy Dreams (out of print) by Ellen Gilchrist (also purchased at The Garden District Bookshop).

* NYRB titles — Faulkner House Books had a fab selection of these, and I purchased Family Lexicon by Natalia Ginzburg and The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington. (I also bought Novelist as a Vocation by Murakami. Not really sure why except for the fact that I’ve been reading a lot of books on creativity lately…)

“She read books as one would breathe air, to fill up and live.” — Annie Dillard
