We Miss the Din: Jennifer De Leon at MetroWest Readers Fest

Got to pretend to be a talk show host last night with Jennifer De Leon. This was the culminating event of MetroWest Readers Fest and it was great.

I got a text last night from my friend Bethany before the event started saying “Love the din of the voices. It’s been so long.” [EDIT: Bethany and I just looked up ‘din,’ and now we know it actually means “loud and unpleasant.” Oops. But I like the sound of that word…we both know what she meant. And maybe lesson learned is that things we might have found aggravating before are so welcome now.] She was right…that pre-event murmuring that you get of people greeting and catching up with each other, finding a seat, maybe saying hello to a stranger next to them.

This was a hybrid program, so we had a good amount of people tuning in virtually. I love that accessibility — and I think it’s here to stay. But, yeah, that “din of voices”…

I know “book events” aren’t everyone’s jam. (Trying to change that in my own small way, though!) For some it’s sporting events, for some it’s LuLaRoe parties. (JK…kind of. But if you have a weird fascination with MLM culture like I do, you should check out my friend @diealoguepod’s episode where she talks to the directors of LuLaRich.) For me, it’s book events. (But really, why not try a book event? They allow you to learn about basically anything…because there are books about everything.)

Pro tip for those doing hybrid programming in the future: Catch that din and share it with those tuning in at home. I think we’ve all missed it.
